Up to three times as many people are being displaced annually as the result of natural disasters than from conflict or violence. For the latter, there exists regional and international protective frameworks, such as the 1951 Refugee Convention. However, there are no existing protective frameworks for climate ‘migrants’ anywhere on earth, much less a legal definition. Yet, it is predicted that over 1 billion people may be displaced due to climate stressors in the next 30 years – within our lifetime.
Solutions-based Projects
Our legal research is the foundational initiative of our trifecta of Solutions.
Our team of researchers focus their efforts upon two projects:
- Firstly, by continuing to build our Legal Database of case summaries for the use of legal practitioners (and a wider audience) if they are interested in litigating issues surrounding climate migration.
- Secondly, by producing regional and jurisdictional Legal Toolkits for use as a resource by communities impacted by climate-induced displacement. These will outline potentially enforceable legal rights and duties.
Should you wish to get in touch or join our team, please email Robert Los, our Director of Legal Research at [email protected]. The reports are our biggest project and will take the most leg work. For more information on our Legal Researcher positions visit our Join Us page.
