Current Affairs Reporter

The Earth Refuge team is seeking to recruit one or more reliable and creative volunteer(s) to cover current affairs regarding climate change, climate migration, environmental justice and related topics on a regular basis.

You are probably well aware of the fact that climate migration is now increasingly featured in both international & local news coverage as the world starts to take notice of this ever-worsening issue and the fact that no legal protections exist or are utilised e.g. the case of the Bangladeshi man accepted as an ‘environmentally displaced’ individual in France, or the Biden administration’s executive order

Though we publish more in-depth observations and analyses of these topics in our Archive, we would like for our readers and contributors to remain up to date with the goings on in this sphere. A live timeline, if you will.

Duties & Responsibilities

As a Reporter, you would be tasked with keeping track of these topics in the news, and drafting brief summaries detailing the ‘who, what, when, where, why and how’ in 3-4 paragraphs.

These summaries would then be published on the website to keep our readers up to date, and would also be posted on our Instagram stories (@earthrefuge) on a regular basis.

  • Submit at least two 3-4 paragraph summaries to Earth Refuge on a weekly basis, though this timeframe is negotiable depending on the flow of news.
  • Summaries must be submitted in Word document format, with sources hyperlinked

    • climate justice,

    • international/regional environmental law and climate change,

    • topics and themes therein.
  • Before starting the drafting process, please run the story by the Co-Directors of Earth Refuge.
  • Reference all sources correctly and responsibly.
  • You must send the final draft to be checked and edited by at least one Co-Director before publication.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Excellent analytical skills, critical thinking and attention to detail
  • Excellent written skills
  • Ability to extract key points from an article or news piece
  • Good grasp of current affairs, and ability to follow continuing storylines
  • Ability to meet deadlines
